1. Subsystems and Boundaries

A "subsystem" is not a thing; it is a projection. Choose a cut into subsystem and environment. Projected survivors and a join multiplicity measure how strongly subsystem and environment are coupled — how many pairs remain compatible with a global survivor.

This is not an assumption; it is counting.

2. The Open-System Law (Global Closure + Local Growth)

For the universe and a fixed cut, an irreversible accounting identity holds: global time increment equals subsystem increment plus environment increment plus boundary term.

Consequence:

  • Globally: irreversibility is monotone (always increases)
  • Locally: local budget can increase temporarily only if the boundary term and/or environment accounting compensates

This is the complete mathematical resolution of "how order can increase locally."

3. Definition of Life (Π-Fixed, No Biology)

A subsystem is alive if it satisfies both:

Persistence (Macro-Attractor): There exists a coarse-graining such that the macrostate remains inside a bounded attractor region over long time despite perturbations. This is purely structural: "alive" means "stays in a stable macroclass."

Boundary Maintenance (Open-System Requirement): That persistence must be sustained by positive boundary flow. Otherwise, in a closed subsystem, feasibility collapses and structure dies.

Life is: a stable macroclass maintained by positive boundary coupling flow.

No metaphysics. No special matter. Just a fixed point of the ledger + boundary equations.

4. Replication

Life becomes "evolutionary" when the subsystem contains a replication morphism — a process that takes one instance of the macroclass and produces two instances in the same macroclass.

Replication consumes local budget and produces irreversible records; therefore it necessarily requires positive boundary flow over the replication cycle. Replication is a specific pattern of boundary accounting, not a mystical life-force.

5. Variation and Selection

Replication in a witness world cannot be perfect without infinite cost; finite procedures admit perturbations. So variation is unavoidable.

Selection is verifier filtering: Given a population of instances, survivors are exactly those passing a total viability test — does the instance stay within the attractor for a horizon under the environmental boundary channel?

Evolution is just repeated ledger filtering: replicate → generate variants → apply viability test → retain survivors → repeat. This is exactly the same form as any kernel process.

6. Intelligence (Forced Definition, Not Psychology)

Intelligence is the subsystem's ability to collapse Ω frontiers cheaply while maintaining viability.

The forced intelligence scalars are:

  • Refinement per observation: How much distinguishability each observer-time bit produces
  • Refinement per energy: How much distinguishability each cost unit produces

Intelligence is high efficiency on both metrics while remaining viable (staying in the attractor).

This ties cognition directly to the same ledgers: time/observer ledger, energy/cost ledger, and refinement ledger.

7. Why "Thought Waste" Appears

Internal "thought" is internal record formation over an internal hypothesis space. If it does not increase task-relevant refinement, that is wasted thought: spending observer-time without collapsing a relevant frontier.

The only Π-consistent remedy is structural: commit internal records only when they are separators that increase refinement; otherwise keep them undecided rather than minting fake closure.
